Murthy Poised to Help CCBC with its Work in Global Education
Baltimore, Md. – (17.Feb.2012): The Community College of Baltimore County is pleased to announce that the prominent and internationally renowned U.S. immigration law attorney, Sheela Murthy, has agreed to serve as the honorary chair of CCBC’s Global Education Committee. Murthy is the founder and president of the prestigious Murthy Law Firm, located in Baltimore County, MD.
CCBC’s Global Education Committee supports the Global Education initiatives and serves as the fundraising arm for the National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant and historic Hilton Mansion’s rehabilitation campaign. CCBC was one of six community colleges nationally to receive a $500,000 NEH Challenge Grant. The grant forms the foundation of CCBC’s efforts to raise $1 million in matching funds based on a two-to-one match ratio. The Hilton mansion, which is located at CCBC Catonsville, will house the college’s new Center for Global Education which will be a focal point for workshops, meetings and activities associated with Global Education
“We are honored and pleased to have Ms. Murthy join our Global Education initiative,” says CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis. “Hers is an articulate and passionate voice, well respected in our community on both local and global issues. Her expertise and counsel will provide a wonderful resource in support of our efforts to enrich the global experiences of our more than 70,000 students.”
According to Murthy, she welcomes the opportunity to assist CCBC with its Global Education initiatives.
“I am pleased to be a part of a local institution in Baltimore that wishes to expand its reach globally and understands the importance of education and skills in a competitive global market place,” says Murthy.
Murthy received her Masters of Laws (LL.M) from Harvard Law School and has been admitted to practice as an attorney in New York, Maryland and the U.S. Supreme Court. She is a member of several board and professional organizations. Among them, Murthy is on the board of directors of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Eastern Region and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. She is also on the Global Business Advisory Board of the Maryland India Business Round Table and a member and sponsor of the World Trade Center Institute. She is the chair of the board of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. She is also active in the American Immigration Lawyers Association and serves on the Visiting Committee of Harvard Law School. Additionally, Murthy is connected to the worldwide community and holds several leadership roles at organizations including the United Way Worldwide and the MurthyNayak Foundation, among others.
Notable among her many awards and recognitions, in 2011 the Maryland Daily Record recognized Murthy as one of the “Top 50 Most Influential Marylanders,” as well as inducted her into the Circle of Excellence for being a three time winner of Maryland’s “Top 100 Women.” She was recognized by SmartCEO magazine in 2010 as among Baltimore’s “Top 10 Business Owners,” and she received the Small Business of the Year Award from the Maryland Chamber of Commerce that same year. Other honors include “Philanthropist of the Year” from the United Way of Central Maryland, the IndUS Business Journal “Businesswoman of the Year,” and many others.
